Little Orange Typewriter

When I was 13, I entered a young author's writing contest. It was to a publication called "Young Ambassadors" put out by Back to the Bible. I was thrilled beyond measure when I received the notification that I was a WINNER! The story was printed in the magazine and my grandmother, ever so proud of the author she knew I was destined to become, bought me a typewriter as a symbol of her belief in me.

Several years ago, it dawned on me that I did not have a copy of that winning entry. I did not have a copy of the magazine either. I really wanted one. Together with my dad, we searched out his storage space in my brother's garage. Would you believe we unearthed more than 3 years worth of Young Ambassador publications.... including the year of the contest that I placed in? The winning entries were published in two separate publications... and the issue that had my story was nowhere to be found.

I was crushed. But not defeated. I googled and researched and  made some inquiries and finally found someone who remembered this now out of print magazine. And had access to the archives where it was stored. While they could not send me a reprint of the magazine, they were willing to make a photo copy of my story! A few weeks later I received a copy in the mail. It now hangs framed in my little office area.... to read this story please visit "Theirs to Love" on the next page!
